Meet your neighbors at Hobart's National Night Out pool party

Help the Hobart Police Department celebrate National Night Out and meet your neighbors, local police and community leaders from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the City of Hobart Community Pool, 400 W. 10th St.

Pool admission is free, with free hot dogs and soft drinks. Activities include K-9 and S.W.A.T. Unit demonstrations, Child Identification Cards and child seat inspections and a 50-50 raffle.

On display will be police equipment and patrol cars, mountain bikes, ATV’s and fire trucks. Information will be available on how to start a Neighborhood Watch Program, tips for Home & Personal Safety, and copies of the Hobart Police Department newsletter.

Seniors enjoy second home

The Maria Reiner Senior Center, 705 E. Fourth St., Hobart, is a home away from home to many senior citizens in the area.

The center offers many programs, yoga, arts, a weekly book club with reviews, an exercise area - last week there was a trip to a casino. Each Tuesday breakfast is served from 9 to 11 a.m. at a cost of $3 to members. On Thursdays, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., a healthy lunch is served, also at a cost of $3.

To become a member, just stop in for an application. The fee is $25 a year. For more information, visit www.hobartseniors.com.

Concerts in the park

The Hobart City Improvement Committee concert at 7 p.m. Thursday at Revelli Band Shell in Hobart's Festival Park, 111 E Old Ridge Road, features the popular Jack D’Amico with his Frank Sinatra tribute. On Aug. 8, David Amalillo will present his One-Man Band show. Free blood pressure testing will be provided by the Visiting Nurses Association.

Build a bear

Miller’s Senior Living Community, 5911 Lute Road, Portage, is hosting a Build-A-Bear Workshop at 3 p.m. Aug. 9. Before school starts, come to create a bear with your child or grandchild. The cost is $5 for one bear. Register by Sunday by calling Gwen Kaiser at (219) 764-0628.

Scholarships awarded

Hobart Kiwanis Club presented scholarship awards of $1,500 each to Heather Easton of River Forest High School, Katelyn Erdelac and Seth Hamilton, both from Hobart High School, and Ashley Abila from Lake Station High School.

Adopt a duck

The Hobart Community Foundation is selling Dam Duck Race tickets. They can be purchased from any foundation member, in front of the Hobart Post Office on Saturday mornings, and at the Summer Market on the Lake every Thursday. The race is set for Aug. 18

Pig roast planned

The Hobart Chamber of Commerce has scheduled its 23rd annual Pig Roast from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 18 at Festival Park, 111 E. Old Ridge Road, the day of the Dam Duck Race.
Tickets may be purchased from any Hobart chamber member or at the Hobart Market on the Lake on Thursdays.
