HOBART | On November 21, Joan Martin Elementary fourth grade students in Mrs. Bullington’s class dissected plants and presented Plant Cell Diagrams to classmates.

In chapter one of our new science program, National Geographic, we learned about the life cycle of a plant. To conclude the chapter, a plant dissection was used as an investigation. We had to cut the flower apart to find the petal, pistil, stamen, anther, ovary, and pollen. We learned how to use a microscope, and observed different plant pieces under the lens.

After dissecting the plants, we presented cell diagrams to our classmates. One week earlier, we were presented with an assignment to create a homemade plant cell. We learned the importance of the different plant cell parts and what they do. We were expected to use items we could find around our homes. Many of us chose to use PlayDoh, food, and Legos. We also had to label the different parts that make up a plant cell and were very creative with this process.

All of us were very excited to learn more about how a plant cell works and the life cycle of different plants. “I am so proud of all of the hard work and effort my students have put forth throughout this unit,” said Mrs. Bullington.
