HOBART | Construction of the final phase of the Oak Savannah bike trail will start this summer in Hobart, a project engineer told the Hobart Park Board.
"We hope to finish the trail this year with restoration completed by next year," First Group engineer Dennis Cobb said.
The Hobart Park Board approved a $20,000 request from Cobb for funding which will be used for engineering costs for the project.
Cobb said he submitted plans for this section of the bike trail, including comments, four weeks ago.
A final report will be submitted to the Indiana Department of Transportation by the end of March.
A bid letting for the project will be in July, Cobb said.
"Then it's off to the races," Cobb said.
This phase of the trail will start at Linda Street, near the American Legion, and end at Cleveland Street and Ind. 130 near the Porter County line, Cobb said.
Features of the trail will include a doggie water fountain which can be used by pets as well as individuals wanting to fill water bottles.
Other plans include construction of a pavilion near Pennsy Park, which will include bathrooms, picnic tables and benches.
The total cost of the bike path, which starts in Griffith and continues through Portage, is $1.2 million to $1.5 million, Cobb said.
This phase of the path is being funding by an 80/20 grant in which 80 percent is paid for by the federal government and the remainder by the city.
Work to complete the bike path started in 2006. Delays in the project including obtaining rights of way, Cobb said.
