HOBART | A Chicago woman attempted to snatch the purse of a woman while the two were inside a store restroom at the mall, police said.
Gladys Hughes, 69, was charged in Lake Criminal Court with attempted theft.
Police were called to J.C. Penney at Westfield Southlake mall July 13 by a woman who said another woman had removed her purse while she was inside a restroom, court documents state.
The woman told police her purse was taken from a restroom stall hook and she spotted it on the floor in the stall next to her.
The woman whose purse was taken followed Hughes out of the restroom and attempted to stop her, police said.
Security was able to provide the license plate for the car Hughes left in, and police were able to trace the car ownership back to an acquaintance of Hughes, police said.
A J.C. Penney employee identified Hughes from a photo lineup.
Police said Hughes has an arrest record in several states going back to 1963.
