HOBART | A 59-year-old Hobart man was charged with stealing another man's package from his front porch, police said.

Demetrios Colbert was charged with conversion through Hobart City Court, police said.

Police Sgt. Robert Laco said he was patrolling the Barrington Ridge subdivision Monday when he saw Colbert walking around the area.

Laco said when he initially saw Colbert, he wasn't carrying anything. Laco later saw Colbert carrying a large cardboard box, he said.

Laco stopped Colbert, who had been a suspect in thefts in the neighborhood, and saw the package he was carrying was addressed to another man, police said.

Colbert admitted he had taken it off a front porch, police said.

Police remind residents to be vigilant this holiday season because the theft of packages being delivered to homes increases significantly.

When possible, track packages via the Internet, and schedule drop-offs when feasible or have someone pick the package up or you, police said.
