HOBART | Ridge View Elementary Student Council kicked off their “Pennies for Patients” program last week with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society® (LLS), the world's largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer research and education.

During this three week period, Feb. 4-22, students are collecting spare change to support the (LLS) mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

In schools each year across the country, kids are learning about service, leadership, philanthropy, and the power of spare change. Since 1954, LLS has awarded more than $814 million in research grants. When LLS was formed, a blood cancer diagnosis was almost always fatal. Thanks in part to fundraising efforts, like Pennies for Patients, survival rates have doubled, tripled, and even quadrupled for blood cancer patients. Last year, over 37,000 patients received Patient Financial Aid from LLS. In the United States, more that 12,000 children are diagnosed with cancer every year.

After two weeks, Ridge View students have already collected over $650 in spare change to donate. "It is amazing how everyone donating just a little change can add up so quickly," said Bobby Arvin, fifth grade student, student council member.

Anyone or business that would like to contribute to our campaign may visit www.lls.org or bring in money/send a donation payable to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and send to: Ridge View Elementary, 3333 W. Old Ridge Road, Hobart, IN 46342
