HOBART | Shirley Heinze Land Trust will host a volunteer workday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Bur Oak Woods in Hobart. Volunteers will be making a firebreak that will be used for a prescribed burn this fall or spring.
Volunteers and staff will be using mowers, brush cutters, leaf blowers and loppers to clear an 8-foot wide lane around the burn unit. During lunch, learn all the details on the large savanna restoration taking place at this preserve and how fire is used as a tool to aid in restoration. Lunch will be provided.
RSVP to email@example.com or call (219) 242-8558 so staff can plan accordingly.
From Ridge Road heading east from Interstate 65, travel to Liverpool Road and turn right (south) on Liverpool. Travel approximately one mile. Bur Oak Woods will be on the left (east) after the railroad tracks. A small parking area is on the southwest corner of the preserve (look for the volunteer workday sign).
