Concert and cake walk

Hobart City Improvement’s summer concert season continues from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursdays at the Revelli Band Shell in Festival Park, 111 E. Old Ridge Road.

The Hobart Community Band, formerly known as The Rusty Pipes, will take the stage Thursday. Help the Hobart Food Pantry and maybe win a fresh baked cake, pies or cookies at the annual Cake Walk, also slated for Thursday.

The band is also trying to help the Hobart Food pantry this year by encouraging concert goers to bring nonperishable food items to donate at the concert. In return for a donation, receive one free ticket to participate in the cake walk.

The cake walk has been a long tradition in Hobart, and when the school bands stopped doing it, The Rusty Pipes picked it up and it has been part of their summer concert performance. Cake walk proceeds help the group buy new music and pay expenses.

Selections for Thursday's concert include "American Flourish," "My Heart Will Go On," "St. Louis Blues," "Begin the Beguine," "All That Jazz" and an Armed Forces salute.

The band invites anyone who is a high school senior or older and has played in a band to join the group. Rehearsals are held from 7:15 to 9 p.m. Wednesday evenings at Hobart Middle School, 36 E. Eighth St. Auditions are not required. If you have questions, contact Susan Williams at info@hobartareaconcertband.com.

The July 4 concert entertainment is yet to be announced by the City Events Committee, and will be followed by a holiday fireworks display that begins at dusk in Festival Park.

On July 11, David Lopez will perform his Elvis tribute. Main Source Bank will have a special display with programs and special samples.

Movies in the Park

After select Thursday evening concerts at Festival Park, Movies in the Park will be screened at dusk. "The Lorax"  will be shown this Thursday, and future screenings include "Hotel Transylvania"  on July 11 and "E.T The Movie" on July 25. Admission is free.

Garden club recognized

The Hobart Garden Club has received a national citation for its recent beautification project for the Hobart area. The club's first project was the Hobart Post Office grounds, which had grown into disrepair due to a lack of funds.

They have many more projects on the agenda, such as the City Ball Park and a garden walk fundraiser. for the club's many projects.
