HOBART | While it was still too chilly for April outdoors, spring was definitely in the air inside Avalon Manor on Wednesday evening as BRIDGES Development Foundation and Friends of The Arc Northwest Indiana hosted the 10th annual Buds and Blossoms Evening to benefit The Arc Northwest Indiana.
Blooming plants were used as centerpieces and the floral theme was carried out in the programs and the cookie favors each guest took home.
In addition to dinner, boutique shopping and an art sale featuring works by The Arc clients, several hundred supporters of The Arc of NWI were treated to a raffle, and silent and live auctions that offered everything from a 30-minute Cessna airplane tour to a football autographed by Notre Dame/Green Bay Packer player and Heisman Trophy winner Paul Hornung.
This year's celebrity speaker was Laura Waluszko, news director for Radio One Communications of Valparaiso, who spoke about the rapidly changing media industry and explained how her company's four radio stations and other local media companies are adapting to "fill a niche in Northwest Indiana" as part of the the Chicagoland news market.
Tom Lounges, of The Times Media Company and Radio One Communications, served as emcee and professional auctioneer Jim Lestinsky conducted the live auction.
Planning the event was a committee that included Shirley Dawson, Sharon Kooi, St. Joan Romaniak, Danice Sainato, Carolyn Wiley and staff representatives Sue Crisman, Patti Castle and Deborah Deaton.
