HOBART | Karolyn Dacey of Hebron and James Deu of Valparaiso understand the life-sustaining benefits of pulmonary rehabilitation. Both were crowned Pulmonary Rehab “King and Queen” during the celebration of National Pulmonary Rehabilitation Week at St. Mary Medical Center.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation Week, initiated by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR), aims to educate the community about the role of pulmonary rehabilitation in enhancing the quality of life of individuals with chronic lung disease. This year’s theme, “Inspiration for Life”,‖ honors individuals who struggle to overcome shortness of breath and the pulmonary professionals who work every day to alleviate that struggle and improve patients’ everyday life.

“Karolyn and Jim are great examples of the how pulmonary rehabilitation can help regain control of their health,” said Laura Turco, supervisor of cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation at St. Mary Medical Center. “Both of them have positive attitudes and are great examples of the strength we all get from supporting each other during rehabilitation.”

Outpatient Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation at St. Mary Medical Center offers support and motivation for building healthier lives for patients with heart disease, pulmonary disorders, or for those recovering from other cardiopulmonary conditions. The program combines exercise with education and counseling to help individuals reduce the risk of heart and lung disease or slow its progression.
