HOBART |  Three Gary teens stole a car from a resident in Gary then drove into Hobart looking for homes and garages to break into, police said.

The teens, all juveniles, were charged with vehicle theft and unlawful entry to a vehicle through Lake County Juvenile Court, police Detective Jeremy Ogden said.

Officer Darren Sandilla said he was on patrol Monday night when he saw a car at 39th Avenue and Missouri Street make a quick turn after spotting him.

The driver of the stolen car parked in front of 3820 Colbourne Street then all three occupants got out and began running northbound, Sandilla said.

When questioned by police, the three denied the vehicle was theirs.

Police checked and the car, a Chrysler, had been reported stolen out of Gary, Ogden said.

One of the teens told police they had driven to Hobart to look for garages and homes to break into.

Ogden praised the good work of Sandilla assisted by reserve Officer Brian Taylor.
