HOBART | TradeWinds Services can move full speed ahead with renovations at 3198 E. 83rd Place now that city approval is in place, CEO Jon Gold said.
Gold said TradeWinds selected a contractor to renovate the building after the Plan Commission approved the site plan and the Board of Public Works endorsed the easement allowance.
"Work will get started in two weeks. We're hoping to break ground on the project in February," Gold said. The targeted date to move into the renovated building is September.
TradeWinds, which serves adults and children with developmental disabilities, is remodeling a 55,000-square-foot building formerly occupied by AmeriClean, Gold said. It plans to remodel the exterior as well as the interior, he said.
TradeWinds is currently at 5901 W. Seventh Ave. in Gary.
Plans for the Hobart TradeWinds include a special needs day care for both adults and children, administrative offices, a sign shop and a sewing shop, and an outdoor area for adults and children, TradeWinds officials said.
Board of Public Works member Thomas Ehrhardt, who also serves on the Plan Commission, said the project is ready to fly.
"This is a welcome addition; it's a great organization because they give so much dignity to so many people," Ehrhardt said.
The site for the new TradeWinds building already looks a lot better, Ehrhardt said.
"Once they make improvements to the building and get the site development completed it will be a wonderful addition to the city," Ehrhardt said.
