HOBART | Students at Ridge View Elementary celebrated Veterans Day for the first time on Monday with seven local veterans. The program began with the Pledge of Allegiance and the Star-Spangled Banner sung by a small choir of 4th and 5th grade students led by Mrs. Kris Loos, Music Teacher. This same choir had the privilege of performing at Veterans Memorial Park on Sunday, too.
Miss Lisa Wilkison, Principal, shared the history of Veterans Day along with a poem before introducing seven veterans in attendance and three others who were unable to attend. Each veteran came to the front with the student(s) who invited him or her. Miss Wilkison read their names, branch of service, years of service, military placement, awards, conflicts, and students who invited them. The students presented the veterans with a folder containing a thank you card and poem along with a red carnation.
The students celebrated each veteran with a round of applause. Veterans who were unable to attend received the folder and flower, too. The program ended with Mrs. Loos playing Taps on her trumpet while we remembered fallen soldiers. The Veterans appreciated the program.
