HOBART | The George A. Christakis YMCA Honorary Memorial Award will be given to the couple who want to take charge of their own health by attending the Hobart Family YMCA on a regular basis and promoting a healthier lifestyle.
It is named for George A. Christakis, who attended the Hobart Family YMCA from 1983 until his death in 2013. He began at the age of 68 and participated until he was 98.
He walked laps, lifted weights and swam 6 days a week for 27 years and after reaching 95, trimmed his schedule to four days a week doing stretching activities and swimming.
"He had a wonderful social circle of friends and acquaintances that made his retirement rich beyond the physical activity," said Hobart Family YMCA Executive Director Dale Polomchak.
"In a few short paragraphs, each couple applying for this award should state their reason for wanting to attend the Y. George's family will pick the winning entry.
Applications will be accepted through Sunday. The winners will be chosen and announced Aug. 15. Submit written entries to: Christakis Award, c/o Hobart Family YMCA, 601 W. 40th Place, Hobart, IN 46342, or submit email entries to email@example.com.
"It will be an honor for his family to help 'jump start' a senior couple towards a healthier lifestyle, Polomchak added.
The winners will receive a free membership for their first year at the Hobart Family YMCA. "In promoting a healthy lifestyle, his family hopes to keep the memory of their patriarch alive and well, Polomchak said. "George was a man who lived a full, healthy, and productive life in retirement and who made everyone he came in contact with a better person for knowing him."
