The inaugural session for the South Shore Leadership Youth for Community Engagement program, called SLYCE, helped 47 teen participants get acquainted with one another, key community leaders and their own identities as leaders
Designed to build regional leaders and global thinkers, the program is the first of its kind in Northwest Indiana. Participants were carefully selected as the premier class and began their yearlong journey with a dynamic day filled with activities.
Among the key leaders who addressed the class late last month were Lincoln Ellis, president of Linshaell Group Services and former executive director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northwest Indiana; Keith Kirkpatrick, Leadership Northwest Indiana executive director; and Danny Lackey, coordinator of diversity programming, Merrillville Community Schools.
The group will meet once a month for the next year focusing on topics such as the environment, social justice, economic development and other regional issues while learning how to be a strong and connected leader. The SLYCE program's goal is to graduate young leaders who will understand the positive aspects of the region's local communities, be connected to a diverse group of students from other parts of the region, develop meaningful relationships with a number of adults and expand their leadership abilities.
