CROWN POINT | Lake County's Board of Commissioners awarded a $35,875 contract Wednesday to build a mental health treatment area within the Lake County Jail.
Sneed Construction Inc., of East Chicago, was the low bidder among four firms competing for the job.
Sneed will oversee work to convert an unused portion of the jail into an area in which jail inmates can be examined and treated for mental health problems they are experiencing, county officials said.
Jail officials said more than 60 percent of the approximately 14,000 men and women incarcerated at the lockup each year complain of some form of mental illness because many are substance abusers.
Jail officials say the U.S. Department of Justice has mandated the work be done to improve conditions for inmates.
