CROWN POINT | The Lake County Board of Commissioners on Wednesday accepted bids from vendors to reconstruct the Columbia Avenue bridge over the Little Calumet River between Hammond and Munster at an estimated cost of $1.5 million.

Commissioners will take the bids under advisement and could make a decision by their next meeting Aug. 7. A starting date on the work will be decided after the bids are chosen.

The seven bids included Dunnet Bay Construction, of Glendale Heights, Ill., at $1,357,777; Rieth-Riley Construction Co., of Gary, at $1,453,937; Ellas Construction Co., of Munster, at $1,215,822; Ellas Construction Co., of Gary, at $1,302,713; Yates Construction, of Kentland, at $1,258,189; Gariup Construction Co., of Gary, at $1,523,000; and Tonn and Blank Construction, of Michigan City, at $1,437,565.

Bids also were accepted for the estimated $575,000 replacement of the Morse Street bridge over McConnell Ditch in Lowell.

The seven bids included JCI Bridge Group, of LaPorte, at $626,828; Dyer Construction Co., at $739,635; Ellas Construction Co., of Munster, at $687,261; Ellas Construction Co., of Gary, at $625,341; Yates Construction, of Kentland, at $639,685; Gariup Construction Co., of Gary, at $606,000; and Tonn and Blank Construction, of Michigan City, at $736,853.
