CROWN POINT | Lake County police officers have endorsed Sheriff John Buncich for re-election.

Dan Murchek, president of the Lake County Police Association Local 72, said his union and the Fraternal Order of Police's Chris Anton Lodge 125 jointly invited all candidates for sheriff in the May 6 primary election to appear and request the officers' support.

Murchek said after candidates gave speeches, 76 officers voted by secret ballot. He said Buncich received nearly 90 percent of the vote. Sgt. Oscar Martinez was second with 9 percent, and the other candidates split the remaining votes.

Those running for sheriff include Democrats Buncich, Martinez and Richard Ligon and Republicans John Ramos Jr. and county police Officer Dan Bursac.
