CROWN POINT | The Lake County Solid Waste Management District has a new program in which local schools and communities can obtain a colored bench made of recycled plastic in return for collecting 400 pounds of plastic caps.

The district will buy to up 20 benches.

The district has partnered with Green Tree Plastics Inc., of Evansville. The firm makes heavy-duty benches out of recycled plastic.

Leonard White, district solid waste specialist, said the benches normally require 400 pounds of plastic caps and are sold at a discounted price. To promote the program, the district will pay for the cost of the first 20 benches.

They will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.

If a school turns in 800 pounds of plastic caps, it can earn two benches. There is a limit of four benches per school, organization or community.

For more information, contact White at (219) 769-3820, ext. 108.
