CROWN POINT | Lake officials are renewing a program to provide prescription drug discounts to uninsured county residents.
County Commissioners Roosevelt Allen, Gerry Scheub and Mike Repay voted Wednesday to approve the LakeCountyRx discount cards that will be distributed publicly at county and township government offices.
County Councilwoman Christine Cid, D-East Chicago said the card will give uninsured or "underinsured" residents discounts of up to 24 percent off full retail prescription costs at Walgreens, CVS, Fagen and Osco drug stores around the county.
Cid said the program, which is offered through CVS Caremark of Missouri and the National Association of Counties, is free to both the public and costs no tax dollars for the county's participation.
Repay said the county will actually reap $1 for every prescription filled through the card as part of CVS Caremark's marketing program for publicizing the discount cards.
Cid said the cards will also be available in township trustee offices and other community social organizations. There are no enrollment fees or forms to fill out, no age or income, or medical-condition restrictions. The entire family is covered with just one card and all commonly prescribed drugs are covered.
