LAKE STATION | A 27-year-old Gary man was apprehended by Lake Station police after leading them on a high-speed chase that ended in Gary, police said.
Andre J. Woods was charged with one count of resisting law enforcement, a class D felony; as well as the following, all class A misdemeanors: two counts of resisting arrest, one count criminal recklessness, one count of failure of duty and one count of reckless driving.
Woods was stopped by Lake Station police officer Ron Potrebic for speeding at 4 p.m. Thursday, police Detective Mike Smith said.
Potrebic called the department's canine unit to the scene after he checked and discovered Woods, who was acting nervous, had numerous arrests for narcotics, Smith said.
The canine unit searched Woods' vehicle and the dogs alerted the presence of drugs three times, Smith said.
Potrebic asked Woods for permission to inspect the car, whereupon Woods sped away.
Police chased Woods down Clay Street into Gary. Woods ran through stop signs and narrowly avoided hitting a school bus, Smith said.
Woods abandoned his SUV at 11th Street and New Jersey. It struck a parked van.
The van in turn struck an 11-year-old Gary boy whose leg was injured, Smith said.
Woods, who attempted to run from the scene, was apprehended after he tripped, Smith said.
The passenger in Woods' vehicle escaped from police, Smith said.
