LAKE STATION | A 29-year-old Gary man was killed in an early morning crash Friday involving a flatbed truck and a car, police said.
The man has been identified as Travis Sanders, of the 800 block of Polk Street, a Lake County coroner's office spokesman said. Cause of death was listed as blunt force trauma to the head.
The accident, at the intersection of Central Avenue and Grand Boulevard, was reported to police at 2:04 a.m.
When they arrived, police saw the truck facing east on Center Avenue in the inner lane. A car was also facing east, partly in the outer lane of Central Avenue.
Police said it appeared the car had struck the rear passenger side of the truck.
While police awaited the arrival of the Lake Station ambulance, officers attempted to give medical aid to Sanders, who was driving the car. Sanders was transported to St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart, where he was pronounced dead while being treated, police said.
The truck driver, a 56-year-old man from Hobart, said he was stopped at the traffic light in the inner eastbound lane when the car struck the rear of his truck.
The truck driver complained of pain, but declined medical treatment.
A Breathalyzer test was administered to the truck driver, and police said alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
