LAKE STATION | The Lake Station Board of Works has awarded a $93,614 contract to a Griffith company for the 34th Avenue sidewalk project.
Walsh and Kelly submitted the lowest of six bids.
Other base bids received by the board included Hook's Concrete Construction, $94,779; Rieth-Riley Construction, $142,310; Rex Construction, $108,166; Gariup Construction, $117,700 and J & J Newell Concrete, $11,133.
The project will include installation of sidewalks along 34th Avenue between Florida and Oregon streets, Mayor Keith Soderquist said.
"This is the first time for a sidewalk in that area," Soderquist said.
The new sidewalk can be used by children who now must walk in the street to reach Rosser Park off of Oregon Street and East 33rd Avenue.
Funding for the project will come from the city's Community Development Block Grant, Soderquist said.
"That's the allotment we receive from the county every two years," Soderquist said.
Work on the project is expected to get underway within the next couple of weeks.
"Now that we've awarded the contract we want to get started on this as soon as possible," Soderquist said.
