LAKE STATION | Residents are encouraged to continue their green efforts as the city heads into the final weeks of a national recycling competition, Michael Del Toro said.
Del Toro, who serves as director of the city's Solid Waste Department, made a plea to residents at a recent City Council meeting.
Lake Station was chosen to represent Indiana in the SC Johnson Green Choices Recycling Challenge, a contest that aims to encourage waste reduction and increase household recycling.
Representatives from Recyclebank approached the city earlier this year about entering the contest, Del Toro said.
The winning community will receive a $100,000 grant.
Lake Station, in the most recent tally, ranked 31st in the nationwide recycling challenge, sponsors said.
The name of the winning community will be announced in late January or early February after everything is calculated, Lucie Poulicakos said.
Poulicakos serves as the Recyclebank account manager.
As of Friday, the communities ranked in the top five were Lakes at Red Rock, Va.; Huntington Woods, Mich.; Horace, N.D.; Union Grove, Wis.; and Hampstead, N.H.
Lake Station residents are asked to recycle then log on to Recyclebank.com to receive points for their efforts.
The rewards points earned can be redeemed for discounts and deals from more than 3,000 local and national businesses, Del Toro said.
The challenge began July 2 and is scheduled to run through Dec. 31.
