CROWN POINT | A Lake Station man faces five criminal counts, including attempted murder while armed with a handgun, stemming from a domestic dispute Saturday in the home he shares with a female partner.

John S. Halaschak, 60, was charged by Lake County prosecutors on Saturday with attempted murder, a class A felony; criminal confinement, a class B felony; intimidation, a class C felony; criminal recklessness and pointing a firearm, both class D felonies.

According to court documents, Halaschak returned to the home in the 2700 block of Laporte Street about 1 a.m. Saturday after drinking at area bars. He was armed with a handgun, and told the woman he would kill her and himself.

He allegedly fired several times at the woman while confining her to the bedroom and bathroom. Several of the bullets hit a bathroom sink near her head, the probable cause affidavit states. Others were fired as she ran from the back door.

Two Lake Station police officers saw the woman walking without appropriate winter attire and took her back to the home. Halaschak answered the door holding a handgun and the police officers disarmed him, the court documents state.

Halaschak was arrested and booked in Lake Station.
