LAKE STATION | A 25-year-old man drowned late Saturday in Deep River near the Waterfront Lounge in Lake Station, officials said.

Jeffrey Sandefur, of Lake Station, died at 4:35 a.m. Sunday, according to a release from the Lake County coroner's office. Sandefur's manner of death was pending. He had no visible injuries.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources said Sandefur was with friends at Deep River when he told them he wanted to go swimming about 11:47 p.m. Saturday. His friends called for help when he didn't resurface from the water.

Officials pulled Sandefur from the water at 3:37 a.m.

Agencies from Lake Station, New Chicago, Hobart, Lake Hills, Cedar Lake, Crown Point, Lakes of the Four Seasons, the Lake County Sheriff's Department and the Lake County Aquatics Team assisted in the attempted rescue.
