LAKE STATION | A Lake Station man armed with a knife held his mother hostage after she refused to hand over her pain pills, police said.
Anthony Freeman, 37, was charged Tuesday through Lake County court with one count attempted armed robbery and one count criminal confinement, both B felonies, and one count intimidation, a C felony.
Police were called to the 2200 block of Wells Street on Sunday about a 911 call from a woman who lived there, Police Chief Kevin Garber said.
When police arrived at the house, a 55-year-old woman said her adult son, Freeman, had asked to stay at her house.
The woman said she was hesitant, but agreed to allow him to stay as long as he did not cause a problem.
She said she was cooking dinner when her son approached her and told her he wanted her pain pills, Garber said.
When she told her son she didn't have any pain pills, he opened up a utility knife, the woman told police.
She said her son grabbed her with his arm around her neck and held the knife up to her demanding all of her pain medication.
Her son freed her once she gave him some of her medication, the woman told police.
She said she then tried to run out of the front door, but he grabbed her and stopped her from leaving.
At one point, she said she able to break free and run to her bedroom. She locked the door and wedged a chair against the door knob while she called 911.
When police arrived at the house, Freeman started fighting officers and continued to struggle during his arrest, Garber said.
Freeman is being held at the Lake County Jail with no bond.
