LAKE STATION | The Lake Station Sanitary District  Board will consider at a 4 p.m. meeting Thursday the purchase of land the city uses but doesn't own.

The special meeting will be held at City Hall, 1969 Central Ave.

The board will consider the purchase of 1.6 acres near the compost facility off Ind. 51, property the city has used for a number of years for its sanitary pump station, Sanitary District Board Attorney James Meyer said.

Meyer said two appraisals of the property have been made and the average of those two figures is $52,000.

"I'm recommending the board purchase the property because this would clear everything up," Meyer said.

The four-parcel property, which is located south of Burns Ditch, is owned by multiple parties with John Sinar acting as the spokesman, Meyer said.

"The pump station has been there for several years and was even built with federal funds," Meyer said.

The mistake wasn't known until Sinar came forward and demanded the city take action.

"Mr. Sinar sent a demand letter to the city asking us to remove the pump station or pay rent," Meyer said.

Meyer said he will recommend the board proceed with purchasing the land from Sinar and other property owners for $52,000.

"I've deemed that it's best to buy it, get the deed and they the city will clearly own it," Meyer said.
