LAKE STATION | A Gary man charged in a Lake Station armed robbery turned himself in to police Thursday night, Police Chief Kevin Garber said.
Joshua Ray Painter, 27, was charged Tuesday in Lake County court with Class B felony armed robbery in connection with a Jan. 24 incident in Lake Station.
Painter had remained at large until about 5 p.m. Thursday, when he walked into the front lobby of the Lake Station Police Department, Garber said.
Painter and a man suspected to be his accomplice were held by police for additional questioning, Garber said.
Painter had been identified through a photo lineup as the individual who robbed an employee at County Line Market Convenience Store, 5035 Central Ave.
Garber credits the tips police detectives received from residents as contributing to the identification and arrest of Painter.
Garber said it's believed Painter also was involved in robberies at businesses in other communities, including Hobart and New Chicago.
