LAKE STATION | A truck driver was seriously injured Tuesday after his tanker truck caught on fire on the Indiana Toll Road near the Ripley Street exit.

The crash happened at 10:55 a.m. as Dave A. Donervse, 32, of Paw Paw, Mich., was driving a tanker truck westbound, Indiana State Police said. He was following a double trailer driven by James E. Filbert, 61, of Boardman, Ohio.

When traffic slowed down, Donervse was unable to stop in time and crashed into the rear of Filbert's semi, police said. The impact caused Filbert's trailers to crash into each other.

Donervse then lost control of the semi and veered to the left where debris from his truck damaged another truck, police said.  Donervse's truck hit the guard rail and the median, which created a fire that engulfed his truck.

He was taken to St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart with serious injuries, police said. Filbert was treated for minor injuries and released at the scene.

The third truck involved in the crash was driven by Edward W. Bohnke, 52, of New Haven, Ind.

Police shut down westbound lanes until 2:30 p.m.
