LOWELL | Two people were injured Thursday after a motorist fell asleep while driving on Interstate 65 just south of Lowell, Indiana State Police said.
Lukus Hunt, 20, of Delphi, was heading north at 12:26 p.m. in an Oldsmobile Bravada when he fell asleep and veered off the road, police said. The car hit the guard rail and the concrete bridge. The impact caused the car to flip and it then caught on fire.
Thomas Storey, 22, of West Lafayette, was the passenger in the car and was able to get out of the car. Hunt was removed from the car by motorists who stopped to help.
Both were taken to Franciscan St. Anthony Health hospital in Crown Point. Hunt had broken bones and minor burns, police said. Storey had body pain.
Police closed all northbound lanes of I-65 for about an hour following the crash. All lanes were reopened by 1 p.m.
