MUNSTER | The Golden Times, a club started by The Times Media Company, has been offering social activities, camaraderie, and support to senior citizens for 25 years.
Membership is open to anyone 55 and older and their spouse, and costs $5 per year, renewable Jan. 1.
The organization organizes dinner dances, outings, and events, and contributes to worthy causes. In 25 years, Golden Times has donated almost $100,000 to local charities, primarily those that help seniors.
Members are invited to attend any of the Golden Times events, including travel trips and tours, a golf outing, bowling, card and bunco party, picnic, fellowship dinner, theater shows, and a dinner-dance on New Year’s Eve. All events are scheduled in the afternoon, including the New Year’s Eve dance.
All events are priced at cost; Golden Times does not make money from the events.
Golden Times is nonprofit run by a 15-member volunteer board. Members are eligible to run for the board after one year of membership. Board members serve for three years and can be re-elected to a second term.
This year's officers are President Rosemary Block, of Schererville; Vice-President Mary Ann Andress, of Lansing; Secretary Barb Starr, of Lowell; and Treasurer Will Richards, of Merrillville.
"We are really desperate for more board members who will help plan events," Block said. "We always welcome new members, especially those who want to help as board members after their first year."
Block said there is no commitment required of members, and board members need only commit to attending monthly planning meetings held at 11:30 a.m. the first Thursday of each month at The Times, 601 45th Ave., Munster.
Anyone 55 or older interested in joining the Golden Times should call Connie Matras at (219) 923-3678, while current members willing to serve on the board of directors can call Block at (219) 322-1748.
