LOWELL | A 54-year-old man was injured Sunday in a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 65 near mile marker 239 after falling asleep while driving, police said.
The crash happened at 3:20 p.m. as Chester Tanaka, of Morton Grove, Ill., was heading north in a 2006 Honda car. Indiana State Police said Tanaka fell asleep while driving and drifted to the side of the road.
He woke up and overcorrected his car, which caused the car to roll over twice, police said.
The car landed about 50 feet from the interstate in a cornfield, police said. Tanaka was extricated from the vehicle and taken to Franciscan St. Anthony Health hospital in Crown Point. He was listed in serious condition Sunday night.
His wife, Cynthia Tanaka, 51, and 14-year-old son, Kevin Tanaka, were able to get out of the car and were not seriously injured, police said. Both were treated and released from Franciscan St. Anthony.
