LOWELL | The Town Council is stretching its municipal arms westward to possibly annex a Waste Management construction and demolition landfill and more.
The move would bring the town closer to its goal of annexing to U.S. 41 as well as add a new revenue source.
At the request of Councilman Donald Parker, D-3rd, with the full council's support Monday, Greg Guerretaz of Financial Solutions will be preparing a fiscal plan for annexation that goes beyond the 80 acres discussed earlier.
In addition to the southeast corner of Commercial and Austin Avenues on the town's west end, the council wants financial information to include acreage at the southwest corner leading to the Waste management property.
When asked whether he expected a fight from Lake County over the landfill tipping fees, Councilman Edgar Corns, R-5th, said he was told the county has not been collecting tipping fees from that landfill. He said he didn't know why.
The fees would mean thousands of dollars for Lowell if the area were annexed.
Additionally, Parker said Waste Management has shown itself to be a good and generous corporate citizen in other communities.
The council also gave the necessary final approval to annex seven smaller areas within the town.
Although some opposition was voiced two weeks ago, no one commented Monday.
