LAKE COUNTY | A 4-year-old Lowell boy died late Friday night after a head-on collision involving three vehicles near Lowell that sent eight people to the hospital, officials said.

Evan Schubert, of the 1500 block of Northwood Drive in Lowell, was pronounced dead at 10:56 p.m. at Franciscan St. Anthony Health hospital in Crown Point, a spokesman for the Lake County coroner's office said.

The cause of death was listed as blunt force trauma suffered in a motor vehicle accident on West 181st Avenue (Ind. 2) between Hendricks Street and Holtz Road just east of Lowell.

According to Patti Van Til, spokeswoman for the Lake County Sheriff's Department, the child's father, a 29-year-old Lowell man, was driving a Dodge Caravan west on Ind. 2 when he crossed the center lane.

Van Til said the man drove completely in the eastbound lane traveling west when he struck an oncoming GMC box-style delivery truck head on. The driver of a Chrysler Town and Country minivan traveling behind the box truck when it collided with the Dodge Caravan was not able to stop before hitting the rear of the box truck.

Schubert's father and 2-year-old sibling were in the Caravan at the time of the crash and were transported to Franciscan St. Anthony Health hospital with unknown injuries, Van Til said.

The driver of the box truck had to be extricated from his vehicle by Tri-Creek Emergency Medical Service. Van Til said he, too, was transported to St. Anthony's with unknown injuries. The driver of the Town and Country, his wife and two children were transported to the same hospital.

None of the conditions of those injured in the crash were known or available Saturday afternoon.

Van Til said the crash investigation is ongoing. No citations had been issued against any of the drivers as of Saturday afternoon.
