LOWELL | The Town Council voted Monday to remove Councilman Donald Parker, D-3rd, from his seat on the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission.
Council President Edgar Corns, R-5th, was appointed in Parker's place, a move supported by Parker. Corns is opposed to the Illiana Expressway.
The vote came after council Vice President Craig Earley questioned how Parker would vote regarding the Illiana Expressway.
After saying he was waiting on the summary report from NIRPC, Parker said, "At your request, I will not vote for the toll road, but I won't vote against it. I'll abstain. ... You won't hurt my feelings if you take action."
Earlier this year, the council voted to oppose the Illiana Expressway project. Parker abstained then, but has publicly voiced his support of the Illiana and his belief the town must take steps to be prepared for it.
Earley acknowledged Parker's work towards preparing for the expressway by developing a thoroughfare plan.
Councilman Phillip Kuiper, D-4th, said the point is not whether a particular councilman is for or against the Illiana Expressway, but that Parker represents "this body" and his NIRPC vote should reflect the council majority's position.
