LOWELL | The Lowell Fire Department is accepting applications for smoke detectors.

The department has received a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for the smoke detectors.

People who live within the Lowell Fire Department's response area and own their own home are eligible for the program.

The unit is a new 10-year smoke detector with a lithium ion battery that lasts the life of the detector. Applicants can receive up to two smoke detectors per household.

The department also is offering hearing-impaired detectors that will work with hard-wired detectors.

For more information, call the station at (219) 696-6144.
