LOWELL | Lowell High School Junior Joe Long was honored at Thursday’s Northwest Indiana Symphony Halloween Pops concert.

Symphony Executive Director John Cain presented a certificate and $500 check to Long on stage during the concert intermission.

Long has an extensive bio.

Musical Background:

7th year of Concert Band

1 year Elementary School Band

3 years Middle School Concert Band

3rd year of High School Wind Ensemble

 6th year of Private Lessons - currently studying with Denise Kirkland - Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra’s Principal Clarinet

5th year of Jazz Band

2 years Middle School Jazz Band

3rd year of High School Jazz Band

4th year of Orchestra

2½ years Northwest Indiana Symphony Youth Orchestra (Principal 1½ yrs.)

2nd year with Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra (Principal)

3rd year of Chamber Music - woodwind quintet

Long participated in Marching Band Grades 8 & 9 and was a soloist in grade 9

In November 2012, Long was a soloist at a professional orchestra concert and performed Massenet’s Meditation from Thais at the Star Plaza Theatre in Merrillville to an audience of 3,500.

In 2012, Long was accepted into Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, Protégé Philharmonic Orchestra (Chicago) and Merit School of Music (Chicago). Long chose Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Sophomore Outstanding Musician of the Year Award - Grade 10, Lowell High School

In 2013, Long was accepted to Brevard Music Center, Interlochen Summer Arts Camp & Interlochen Clarinet Institute and University of Michigan’s Clarinet Institute. Long chose to attend Brevard Music Center's 6 week camp.
