LOWELL | The wackiest and craziest parade of athletes takes place Saturday as the Lowell High School academic team sponsors its ninth annual dodge ball tournament.
A unique and flavorful combination of the strange and the talented will take to the court in the LHS main gym, 2051 E. Commercial Ave. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the tournament begins at 6, featuring up to four hours of refereed dodge ball play.
Spectators pay $5 to watch 40 teams vie for the coveted dodge ball championship and perhaps the even more coveted team uniform awards.
Student, faculty and blended teams traditionally vie for most unique and unusual team name and related costuming. "In the past, teams have taken on extravagant personas, such as The A-Team, the Amish, lumberjacks, mad scientists, Jedi knights, Smurfs, the WWF, the Quarterbacks of the NFL, The Hangover, Anchorman, and many more grandiose guises," said Tournament Director Joe Gianotti, academic teams director and English teacher.
"Plus, it's the only night of the year when students can throw things at teachers - and the teachers can throw things back."
All proceeds benefit Lowell High School's championship-caliber academic teams, including the LHS Academic Decathlon Team that placed second in the Large Schools Division of this year's state competition last month and just last week received a surprise invitation to compete in the nationals this spring in Minneapolis, Minn.
"Come out for a great family-oriented, entertaining evening that features great music, terrific sport, and a fun-filled atmosphere," Gianotti added.
