LOWELL | A 20-year-old man was critically injured in a single-vehicle crash early Sunday in Lowell, the Lake County Sheriff's Department said.
Cole Midgett, of Lowell, was driving in the 2800 block of Belshaw Road in Lowell about 5:15 a.m. when for unknown reasons he left the road and struck a tree, said Patti Van Til, a spokeswoman for the Sheriff's Department.
Midgett was extricated from a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox by the Lowell Fire Department. Van Til said there was extensive front-end damage to the vehicle.
He was the only person in the vehicle.
Midgett was taken to Franciscan St. Anthony Health in Crown Point with life-threatening injuries, Van Til said. He was later taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
Deputies continue investigating the crash.
Midgett is a running back on the St. Xavier University football team, rushing for 45 yards and a touchdown and catching 20 passes for 242 yards as a sophomore last season, according to the school's athletics website.
Midgett previously played football at Lowell High School, where he was a member of The Times All-Area football team in the 2010 season.
