LOWELL | Residents who set off fireworks in the street are operating outside of the law, and the Town Council wants that law enforced.
Lowell Town Attorney Gregory Sobkowski said state law allows for individuals to set off fireworks on their own property or on the property of other landowners who have granted consent.
The street is the public right of way, and the town has not given its consent, Sobkowski said.
Some councilmen said they saw fireworks set off on residential streets during Fourth of July celebrations that impeded traffic.
The council's interest followed a query by former Town Judge Thomas Vanes, who wondered if the town could do something regarding fireworks discharged in municipal streets.
