LOWELL | Despite an objection from its former owner, the Town Council is moving forward with its plans to demolish the deteriorating hilltop structure adjacent to Town Hall known locally as the Old Grade School.
Maria Bodor, of Illinois, lodged an objection during the Lake County tax sale hearing Oct. 5, Town Attorney Gregory Sobkowski said. The property at 525 E. Main St. was part of the tax sale for unpaid taxes.
Councilman Edgar Corns, R-5th, asked Monday about the basis of her objection. Sobkowski said she did not elaborate.
A judge scheduled a Nov. 14 hearing for Bodor to expand on her objections, Sobkowski said.
In the meantime, Tom Trulley, of the Lowell Building Department, said Valparaiso-based Americo Engineering was retained to inspect the building and prepare specifications for demolition. The town now will advertise for bids to raze the structure.
Trulley said earlier projections put the demolition cost in excess of $100,000.
Once listed on the "10 Most Endangered List" of Indiana Landmarks, the historical school building was removed from the list as demolition became certain.
A Section 106 review required by the Department of Natural Resources when federal funds are sought for such projects has been completed.
The Three Creeks Historical Association, which participated in the review, will take possession of various historical markers at the site before the demolition.
