LOWELL | The Lowell Police Department is inviting residents to get to know their neighbors during the 2013 National Night Out.

From 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, residents are encouraged to hold block parties and cookouts and meet police officers as they visit the neighborhoods, Chief Erik Matson said.

In keeping with tradition, residents also are encouraged to turn their front porch lights on to show their participation in the event, Matson said.

National Night Out is intended to increase awareness and bolster crime prevention efforts.
