LOWELL | If town leaders are successful in attracting light industry to Lowell's expanding boundaries, they will need adequate water supplies.
That's why the Town Council has agreed to have Indianapolis-based Commonwealth Engineering conduct a study to evaluate the amount of potential water from wells on the Lowell Water Plant property.
Director of Public Works Greg Shook said he, Councilmen Donald Parker, D-3rd, and Edgar Corns, R-5th, and a Commonwealth representative recently met with adjacent property owner Ron Bergstrom.
Bergstrom, owner of Saco Industries in Lowell, supports the idea, he said.
"He said he would work with the town any way he could," Shook said of Bergstrom.
Shook said the town gladly will share its findings with Bergstrom.
The study will involve the installation of 12 test wells in the potential slit trench area. The study is expected to take three or four months to complete, and recommendations may be released in January.
The town has been investigating various new water sources for the past year. Those possibilities have included an area sand pit, the Singleton Ditch, the Kankakee River and new wells.
Shook said the town has plenty of water but wants to be prepared for new development, particularly light industry.
In agreeing to spend $37,200 for the study, the council is hoping to find a new water supply that will cost less than the $2.2 million to $3.9 million estimated for the other options.
