CROWN POINT | A Lake Superior Court jury has awarded $450,000 in damages to a former Lowell man for injuries he suffered as a patient of former Merrillville “Nose Doc” Mark Weinberger.
The Indianapolis law firm of Cohen and Malad said Friday that a jury in Lake Superior Court Judge John Pera's courtroom returned that verdict Thursday on behalf of Robert Hall, who now lives in Arizona.
The attorney said Hall asked Weinberger to treat him for snoring and nasal complaints. Weinberger performed unnecessary surgery, which allegedly made Hall's medical condition worse.
Officials at the law firm said the case marked the eighth malpractice case the firm has tried against Weinberger, who faces more than 350 similar lawsuits.
Weinberger also is serving a seven-year federal prison term for a conviction on multiple charges of fraudulent health insurance billing.
His case drew national attention when he fled the country to Europe in 2004 after his medical career collapsed, leaving hundreds of patients and about 40 employees' livelihoods in his wake. He was recaptured three years later in the mountains of Italy and brought back to U.S. District Court in Hammond to face the criminal charges.
