LOWELL | Three people were killed in a rollover crash that sent a vehicle into a Lowell creek Monday morning.
According to authorities, the driver, Raymond Rodriguez, 21, of Lake Village, Sasha Spencer, 20, of Lake Village, along with Dustin M. Gregolunas, 40, of DeMotte, died Monday.
The three were in a 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo traveling east at 7:07 a.m. on the 7500 block of Belshaw Road when the vehicle went off the road into a grassy area, the Lake County Sheriff's Office said.
The car went airborne and hit a tree before coming to a rest on its roof in the creek adjacent to the road, according to investigators. Deputies said they found Spencer and Gregolunas submerged in the water. Rodriguez was found inside the car.
Officials did not say Monday where the three were headed or how they knew each other.
Lake County Sheriff John Buncich called Monday's crash a tragedy.
"It's been some time since we had a tragedy like this," he said.
Deputies said aggressive driving could have played a factor in the crash. Buncich said investigators think aggressive driving such as possibly speeding played a role based on how the car was found and conditions of the roads.
"With a triple fatal like that, we are taking every measure possible to put all the pieces together," Buncich said.
About 1 to 2 inches of snow accumulated across Northwest Indiana by Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service's website.
Buncich recommended motorists slow down while driving in the snow to prevent crashes like Monday's triple fatal.
