LOWELL | Tri-Creek School Corp. teachers recently were awarded grants totaling $10,000 to implement the innovative programs they have proposed and enhance the education of more than 1,310 students.
Lynn Bochart, chairwoman of the grant committee and a director of the Tri-Creek Education Foundation, said this was the 11th year the foundation offered the competitive grant opportunity.
The committee had the difficult task of selecting from 15 worthy projects totaling $28,000, she said.
Grant recipients for the "Rendezvous with a Comet" mock space mission at the Challenger Learning Center are Lake Prairie Elementary School teacher Mary Ann Sytsma ($900); Three Creeks Elementary teachers Stephanie Olson, Trisha Stanton and Linsey Waterstraat ($900); and Oak Hill Elementary teacher David Lilly ($1,200).
Three Creeks teachers earning grants are Kristen Hughes ($555) for "Key Links Literacy Set," Sarah Taylor ($962) for a visit from "Enemy Pie" author, Kassie Hanger ($495) for "Keeping Students' Minds-in-Motion," and Mary Stinnett, Janet Baily and Marilyn Stuckert for "A Study Trip to Indianapolis."
Eighth-graders in Megan McCollister Iussig's ($554) accelerated language arts class will see "Big Fish: A New Musical of Epic Proportions."
Lowell Middle School teacher Beverly Free ($300) and her students will build machines in "Junkyard Wars."
Lowell High School teacher Joe Gianotti ($750) will take his academic decathlon and superbowl teams to the "Indianapolis College Crawl," and high school physical education teacher Annette Weiand's grant of $2,384 will be used to purchase Nike Fuel Bands in "New Tech Fitness."
