LOWELL | The Tri-Creek School Board has approved the formation of a "Girls on the Run" offering at Lake Prairie School.

The 12-week program teaches essential life skills to girls in third through fifth grade and incorporates training for a 5K event.

Teachers Dawn Johannsen and Kerri Coapstick said the national program helps girls make smart choices, particularly for entering middle school.

The girls set a goal for running, work toward that, then realize that goal during a May 17 celebratory run/walk at which "Girls on the Run" participants from across Northwest Indiana will gather.

Board President Doug Ward volunteered to be a running buddy for a Lake Prairie girl. Each girl will have a buddy for the May 17 event.

Principal Lisa Patton said there is a fee on a sliding scale, but no girl who wants to join the program will be turned away.

"I have some discretionary funds from the PTO," she said.
