LOWELL | When Lowell High School held its annual Senior and Scholar Night program last month, two members of the class of 2013 were recognized for a singular achievement.

Kyle Eller and Nicholas Porras both received appointments to the U.S. Air Force Academy, representing full, four-year scholarships worth approximately $180,000 to the Colorado Springs, Colo. school and training center.

"It's special when just one graduate receives an appointment to a military academy, but to have two graduates so honored is really special," said one school official.

Only about 1,000 of the 12,000 applicants are offered admission to the Air Force Academy, a highly competitive appointment.

Both Eller and Porras will have the opportunity to participate in many leadership development programs, including flying aircraft and freefall parachuting, as well as foreign exchange programs.

They will have their choice of 31 academic disciplines ranging from political science to aeronautical engineering and will also study Air Force history, military affairs, leadership and management in preparation for a bachelor's degree and commissioning as a second lieutenant in the USAF.
