CROWN POINT | A Merrillville man was sentenced to five years probation Wednesday after pleading guilty to stabbing another man last summer.

Roger Whitt pleaded guilty to battery stemming from an altercation in August 2012. Whitt had been charged with aggravated battery and two counts of battery after being accused of stabbing a man, puncturing his lung, court records show.

The victim told police that Whitt stabbed him at a home in the 9500 block of Sullivan Court in Merrillville, records state.

Police found Whitt inside the home, bleeding heavily from wounds to his wrist and neck. Police said they believed the wounds were self-inflicted, records show.
